Brown patches on a lawn are most often drought, pet urine, fertiliser scorch, scalping by the mower, or grubs eating the roots. The shape and timing tell you which: irregular patches in a dry spell are drought, round spots with a dark green ring are dog urine, and turf that lifts like a carpet with birds pecking at it is leatherjackets or chafer grubs.
Read the full answer →A lawn that sits wet and fills with moss almost always has compacted soil underneath, often on heavy clay, so water cannot drain and the grass weakens. Moss moves into the gaps. Spiking the lawn 10 to 15cm deep in autumn, brushing sand into the holes and raising the mowing height fixes most of them; only the worst need proper drainage.
