Costs

How much does grass cutting cost?

What a gardener charges to cut a lawn, what pushes the price up or down, the published UK averages, and how to get a fixed price for yours.

In short

Checkatrade's guide, updated May 2026, puts residential lawn mowing at an average of £30 per hour or £30 per 100 square metres, with strimming of overgrown grass at £15 to £110 per job. The price for your lawn depends on its size, how long the grass is, whether clippings are taken away and how often I visit.

What the national figures say

The most useful published numbers come from Checkatrade's grass cutting cost guide, last updated May 2026. It gives an average of £30 per hour for residential lawn mowing, or £30 per 100 square metres if the job is priced by area. Strimming long or overgrown grass before it can be mown is listed separately at £15 to £110 per job, with an average of £62.50. Those are national ballpark averages, and the guide itself notes prices tend to be higher in London and the south.

To help you size your own lawn, the same guide gives rough garden sizes: 50 to 75 square metres for a terrace, 100 to 150 for an average family home, and 150 to 400 for a detached house.

How I price a lawn

I look at the lawn first, either in person or from a couple of photos and a rough size, and give you a fixed price per visit rather than an open-ended hourly rate. That price covers mowing, edging along paths and borders, strimming the bits the mower cannot reach, and leaving the clippings tidy. Taking waste away can carry a small charge depending on how much there is, and I will say so up front.

Checkatrade's guide also makes the point that some gardeners have a minimum charge and that regular contracts work out cheaper per visit. That matches what I do: a weekly or fortnightly round across Wisbech, March, Downham Market and King's Lynn means less travel and a lawn that is never overgrown, so each visit is quicker and the price reflects it.

What makes a first cut dearer

If the grass is knee-high because the house has been empty or the last gardener stopped coming, the first visit is a different job. It needs strimming down, raking off, then mowing in stages so the lawn is not scalped, and there is a lot more waste. After that first tidy-up it goes back to a normal price.

Every quote is free and there is no obligation. Tell me the town, the rough size and how often you would like it done and I will give you a price.
