Brown patches on a conifer hedge are usually cypress aphid, a trim made too late in the year, drought or waterlogging, or a cut that went back into old wood. The RHS says conifers other than yew have little or no ability to regrow from old wood, so brown areas caused by hard cutting will not green up again.

Removing a hedge is priced per job: £100 to £250 for a small hedge of 2 to 4 metres, and £250 to £400 for a large one.

What is illegal, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, is intentionally damaging or destroying a wild bird's nest while it is being built or used, and gov.uk lists an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison per offence. The RHS puts the nesting season at March to August, so I check every hedge for active nests before I cut in those months and hold off if I find one.
