Getting the timing right keeps a hedge dense and healthy, and keeps you on the right side of nesting wildlife. Here's the short version.
Late spring and late summer
For most garden hedges, a trim in late spring and again in late summer keeps them tidy and encourages thick growth. Formal hedges like box or privet may want a little more.
Watch for nesting birds
Birds nest in hedges from around March to August. It's worth checking a hedge before you cut during those months, and holding off if one is in use.
Not sure?
